Background
Justification
East Africa is a region of vast resources that range from raw materials, potential for industries and a population that has potential to spur it towards economic growth when harnessed adequately. Over 50% of the population in the region live below 1 US $ a day. Many of these people are engaged in subsistence agriculture that is no longer sustainable, on small parcels of land that are already exhausted, or have land, but do not have the resources to access equipment that would enable them to exploit it.

General aim of the Course
The main goal of the regional trainers’ programme is to develop a pool of competent trainers who will, in turn, help people engaged in commercial crafts acquire necessary knowledge and skills to make their products internationally competitive.
Course Objectives
The specific objectives of the course are to:
- Create a pool of trainers who will equip export traders of commercial crafts with required skills
- Equip trainers with knowledge and skills that will enable them to:
- Develop awareness of training needs and skills required for training of adults
- Provide a forum for exchange of experiences across the three East African countries
- Develop effective techniques and skills for:
- Facilitation
- Programme development and delivery
- Programme monitoring and evaluation
- Provide trainers with broad-based and specific knowledge in:
- Critical aspects of Export Trade in Commercial Crafts
- The process of exporting
- Commercial crafts (quality, standards, packaging etc.)
Training Methodology
Besides lectures (instructor, guest speaker, question and answer session), the training course will also include group discussions, practical/hands on activities (instructor and group demonstrations), drama or role play, case studies or stories, exercises (during and after sessions), and field trips.
The resource persons will be required to use demonstration and exercises relevant to their topics and the course in general.
Resource Persons
The resource persons will be drawn from a pool of experts in the three modules of the programme from East African Universities, Export Promotion Organizations (EPOs), Private practitioners (Experienced exporters), Financial Consultants, External Trade Departments, Clearing and forwarding agencies, Commercial Banks and Indonesia Export Training Centre.
Training Cost/Scholarship and Acccomodation
The full cost of the training course is USD 1,000 (Ksh. 130,000) to cater for course facilitation / training fees, full board accommodation, meals and field trips, training resource materials, stationery and other training supplies; certificates and cost of training venue. The training cost does not cover medical insurance and other personal expenses in course of the training.
All Participants will be accommodated within AICAD Hostels at JKUAT. There is limited accommodation and participants are requested not to come with dependents.

Training Skills for Training
The aim of this module is to equip trainers with the knowledge and skills in designing, implementing and evaluating training for export trade of commercial crafts.

The Process of Exporting
This module aims to enable participants understand the framework of the export cycle and broaden their understanding of the global trade.

Export of Commercial Crafts
The objective of this module is to introduce trainers of SME producers of Commercial Crafts to the concept of designing, developing and exporting handicrafts to various markets.

Mock Exhibition
This module aims to provide participants with a mock experience of planning and mounting an exhibition.
